The Range Report Thread - March, 2016

  • Did you go shooting recently and want to share your results? Post your targets, share your favorite shooting spot, or a picture of your guns actually being used.

No safe queen pictures allowed! We want to see them in the field, not in your living room.

  • It may not look like much, but here's the difference between just seating to spec COAL and 0.060 off the lands. The constancy is much better without so much jump. Never mind the POI, the wind was blowing pretty good today.

  • Seems like that bullet was out there, what was the COAL?

  • I am guessing this is a Rem 700?

I had trouble getting the hornady 168's to group in my SPS-V. I shot about 600 rounds of them and never got it under 1" consistently. I guess there was just too much of a jump. The 175's did great though. I will bet your group size will shrink in half if you try 175's loaded as long as possible (2.950 OAL in my rilfe).

It is. Pretty amazing what one little thing will do.

Yeah its my 700 SPS-V. I got a box of 178 A-Maxs to try, but I want to find out if those are being killed off for the new ELD's before I do ladder loads.

  • @norcal_in_az it doesn't look like they are. Maybe try the 178 BTHP, higher bc the the AMAXs and probably won't be changed as they are a newer bullet.

In fact I would expect if the 178 AMAX is discontinued the design will closer to the 178 BTHP with the new tip.

  • @rhyno @norcal_in_az

178 BTHP work very well for me.
I have them loaded out at .020 off the lands but have loaded them mag length as well, with very good results.

Yup, just logged one in with my 22LR.

Frustrating day, forgot my rear bag, had lots of failure to fires, don't know what happened never had this happen this much.

This was the worst attempt today at the STS. Inconsistent ammo hurt, the three round group fell out of the target first shot way way low.

  • @orkan I've been playing with the picture loading; sometimes I will add a picture and save but it does not download, I then hit edit and re-upload the picture and save and the save sticks.

EDIT: either this problem was solved by admin or I figured out how to load pictures properly; either way everything seems to be working fine.

  • Here is the range I shoot at. It is 211 yards to the base of the berm from the firing line. On this day I forgot my mat, but luckily had a beach towel aboard. My target is at the 200 yard line,
straight out from the rifle. You can see it if you click the picture and enlarge.

  • On this hill, behind the 200 yard line, are 5 IPSC style targets out to 600+ yards, we are forbidden to ring them; however accidents happen. If you enlarge this you may be able to find a couple.

  • Finally getting the new reloading room squared away enough to relax a bit. Spring is fast approaching and the starlings, pigeons, and other invasive species of birds are back. I spent about an hour of quality time with my Sako Quad 22lr and was able to get 6 sparrows and 2 starlings. :)

Activity was very light, but things are just starting to return from their winter vacation homes. I expect all the vermin to be back within the next two months.

  • I always thought a nice pellet gun for those pests would be nice. Especially since I live relatively close to town. (Within a mile)

Plus a guy could make neat videos like this.

  • Subsonic 22LR is a much better way to go than a pellet gun. Pumping up those PCP's is a pain in the neck, and wringing out the accuracy I want from them is pretty difficult. Definitely not for high volume shooting. Most only get 20-30 shots before needing to be recharged.

Some CCI Quiet from a suppressed bolt gun is where it's at for ultimate quiet times!

  • We used to use the CCI CB shorts for the little buggaz attacking our papayas. Pretty darn quiet and necessary in a clueless state where suppressors are considered evil.

  • @orkan the ones I've researched, like the one he is using, are quite a bit better then that.

He's using a FX Bobcat .22 cal, supposed to give about 130.

The 22lr, even with subs I would be afraid to damage grain bins.

I have read that the European air rifles are quite nice, makes sense given their firearm regs.

But I suppose this is not the thread for this.

  • CCI Quiet is like 710FPS. Not sure how you'd kill much with less smack than that, since the poor trajectory would certainly lead to lots of missing.

  • The CB shorts have the same MV ,710, but are pushing a 29 grain pill.

  • Yeah, I was mainly referring to the pellet rifle vs the 22lr when it comes to damaging grain bins. Meaning that I would think if a CCI-quiet would damage them, then I would suspect an air rifle would as well.

We have an air rifle section here if any of you are into that stuff. I did about a 6 month forray into PCP air rifles and didn't find a lot of pleasure in it. I had a manual pump however. I bet if a guy had a nice 3000PSI compressor and could pump up the tank directly, it would be a lot more fun. Suffice it to say that wearing my ass out on the manual pump (and I bought the best one available) got really old after 35'ish shots. Much more appealing to just load another 22lr mag. ;)

From a killing power standpoint, obviously the CB's will certainly end a little bird's life right quick... but you've got to hit them first! That trajectory leads to plenty of missing in the dakota winds here!

  • @orkan I think you can get an adapter to run from a scuba tank or something, we used nitrogen in paintball guns with good results, I think that would work better then air.

Eh I've just done research on it though.

  • I had a scuba tank setup too. Worked OK, but still not as nice as just opening another box of 22lr. ;)

  • Very true, although some of those boxes are annoying, I like the RWS boxes with the little tab.

(I am coming off a lot more argumentative then I intend to.)

  • Dang,one day early....

    20160318_120641_zpsvdzspmcc.jpg

  • 30 degrees, overcast with gloomy clouds, breezy at 15mph, and snowing a bit... yeah today wasn't as fun as it could be.

Shot my sako quad 22lr first. 5 at 50yds. The group at bottom left. The others are from other days.

    l5ic4gh.jpg

Then I brought out one of my DT SRS-A1's with a TSC 6.5CM barrel. 5 at 100yds, bottom right. Not bad considering I just dropped that barrel in there. I fired some more after this, but the first one is all that really counts, and that was a miss low/right. Next shot was just high right, and the following 3 are in that single hole on the dot. Rusty... rusty indeed. The winter has been long.

16+mph winds, 36 but feels like 26 and it was snowing.

10 shots at approx. 10 yards w/ my P22. She's beat up a bit....I really need to give her "spa day" one of these days. ;)

  • Cold.

Went to the range to do a pressure ladder on the Peterson 269 and Hornady ELDm.

Not great, so I shot my pistol.
    29RnNak.jpg

  • ugh... I'm glad I got some rounds off earlier today. It's total shit outside right now. Freezing rain badness. It's only going to get worse tonight too. I just heard one of our XDM airsoft guns going off in the office... so I'm sure someone will be posting their target soon. ;)

    N8LFcX1.jpg

  • Yeah I wasn't going out in that. All was going well until I started laughing :joy:
Edit: I should note I managed 10 "rounds" at 10 yards

  • You forgot datestamp. I witnessed your display of sissiness today, so you're good... but in the future be sure to datestamp. ;)

  • You weeny, I was outside working when we had crap like that, I guess luckily it was snow.

I was like well crap looks like I'll have to wait a month haha. My hands froze setting up that steel, but it was interesting as I've never shot pistol in that kind of weather, even though I'm out in that kind of weather all the time.

  • Woo I made it. Damn social obligations messing with my gun time.

Well crap....picture won't upload off the phone. I'll have to figure this out at home on the laptop.

Also this 3 shots at 10 meters from a holster. Not my best but its been awhile. Lets see if I can tighten that up.

Also its 1120 PST. Day one I'm in!!

  • I love this idea...but can't do it this month my wife is due to deliver our 3rd in a couple of weeks...so we are traveling on weekends to the Dr. (long story...but the Dr. is about 5 hrs away and nowhere to shoot when out of town). I will be in on this in an upcoming month for sure though!

It is nice to see that some of your groups are larger than 0.015! Makes me feel a little better about my shooting....of course I am not shooting in the freezing rain and snow...and usually don't count my cold bore shot.

  • I know I'm not in the running...but gonna play the days I can. I shot about 10 rounds today with my fnx tactical/osprey. My 5yr old son saw me shooting and asked to shoot...so he put about 25 rounds through my suppressed Mark II.

There it is. We used them when we were doing force-on-force training back when we did defensive handgun classes. They are pretty awesome for that. Not as good as true sim rounds or UTM rounds... but a close second and far more affordable.

  • Interesting, is there any steel on it? I looked at their M&P version and it is all plastic.

Don't know. I did't much care. It was just a training aid. We've put a pile of bb's through the thing. I've even shot a pigeon or two with it. lol
