Up early and headed to the range; road was passable but parking lot is still a pond. Windy, too windy to shoot. Waited 3 hours hoping for a lull, no dice. Back at the home range. At least we know we can get into the range once the wind changes!!
-
Here's to another month
-
I got to shoot 1000 yards for the first time today. My father in law has a farm in Mississippi where I can actually shoot a little over 2000 yards if I ever get proficient at it.
I ended up hitting twice today. Here are some things I learned from my first time shooting at 1000.
-
My bushnell elite 1600 range finder is a great rangefinder...as long as it is less than 700 yards. I could not get it to range consistently past that. Once in a while it hit trees at 1250, but nothing consistent past 700 or so.
-
Shooting at 1000 yards is much more difficult than just dialing up a few more mils on the scope from 600. EVERYTHING is infinitely more difficult. Wind, mirage, ranging, everything.
-
Mirage is my worst enemy. I hate it worse than wind. At least wind is somewhat predictable...but mirage is just horrible.
-
With 308 there is a big and Important difference between 1000 yards and 1058 yards. I was hitting low to start with and this was part of it.
-
A head wind will cause rounds to hit low as well. I knew this, but had never shot far enough for it to make a difference.
-
When I think I am getting good at this sport, it will quickly remind me that there is so much more to learn.

More rain ahead, rangis interruptus is very frustrating:angry:
Shot 5 on the paper and lost count listening to the boink.

Since the corn is out and I can shoot less than 600 yards now I decided to check my zero again. It has been about 300 shots since I checked zero...and it is still on!
I did however get a reminder of the importance of loading the bipod when shooting off of a hard surface. The first group was shot without loading the bipod and second group was the with the bipod loaded. I'll take responsibility for the one that went left ...but even including it the group is only 0.404". If you take out the flier the last four were 0.203"...and it has been over 500 rounds since I have cleaned this barrel!!!
Travis sure can make a barrel that shoots.

@dddoo7 Very nice:smile:

So with today I am starting a new challenge for myself...and I challenge you all to try it too. I am doing a cold bore dot drill. The challenge is that you get only 1 shot and one dot per day. You can take more than 20 days to complete it...but minimum number of days it can be completed in is 20. Also...it must be your first shot of the day!
Today is my first day. It went well, but I got lucky. The mirage was visually moving the target more than the width of the dot. I just waited till it settled all it was going to...held center of the dot and squeezed. We will see how it goes tomorrow hopefully.
100 yards...DTA SRS 308. 175 SMK

Range? Rifle/cartridge used? I assume it was the DT there... ?

Today's cold bore did not go quite as well. I chambered the round and the bolt was a little tight in closing, but I didn't think much about it. The round went way left. I tried another round and it was tight closing as well...and also went left. Then I noticed that the brass had a small dent on the shoulder. I don't know if there was something in the chamber or what, but I ran a bore snake through it a few times and the third round chambered without resistance...and hit the dot. Oh well...guess I will try it again later. I did bring it home and completely cleaned the barrel. After 500 rounds and it still only took a about 8 patches to be pulling them through clean. This is a great barrel.
I will probably go shoot a few times this afternoon so that I am not shooting on a clean cold bore for the dot test tomorrow.
-
3 stack.
-
Whatever was wrong...cleaning fixed it. I guess there was a piece of carbon or something in the chamber.
These are the first five shots after cleaning
For some reason...my scope was set 0.2 mil left...and it shows.
-
Well my rifle came back, and I had half the day off because it rained/sleeted/snowed and decided to go shoot regardless.
It was 34* and raining/sleeting/snowing.
By the tune I got the rifle zeroed my fingers were numb and I could only manage the giant group to the upper right.
It'll be awhile before I can go out and shoot again however.
Love the stock so far but I'll need a lot more time behind it to say for sure, much more comfortable to lay behind, hand is more comfortable.
Oh and the Magazine is awesome, it'll take a little while to get use to loading it though.
-
@rhyno
is that the Grayboe? It looks real good.
-
Good looking rifle.
-
@mamalukino indeed, feels a lot better.
Minus the muzzle break, it was dirty so I threw it in the ultrasonic cleaner with some citronox to clean it, left it in there to long and the finish came off.
I'd post my thoughts but I want want more range time.
Way more solid feeling the the B&C I had on it before.
-
I am itching to get back to the range

This target ammo sucks. Yesterday was hunting and today's was "target" wad cutters; should have been called "keyhole" ammo. I think I've shot more keyholes than clean holes with this "target" ammo. Need to get some more of the good stuff.
-
2 in the body one in the head. I also shot some on paper, but I am frustrated with those and won't show them. The bolt was slightly tight opening this evening...and the brass was scratched up when it came out. Hits were all over the place (all within an inch, but all over the place). I cleaned the chamber again and put four in one 1/4" hole. I have no idea how the dust and dirt is getting in my chamber, but I guess I need to check every day before shooting.

Thought I would get out today then lost track of time

Worked daylight to dark again. Got the back wall and insulation on dads building...but didn't shoot today till after dark. I do believe it is good for any ccp holder to practice shooting with a light and to carry a 300 lumen plus reliable light (surefire).
