Rem 700 Deep Chamber

  • So I have a Rem 700 and the chamber is cut way too deep, it is so deep that even at mag length for my AICS mags i still have .40 jump to the lands.
So I come you to all for advice Obviously i need to re-barrel it to get the accuracy that i am looking for. but is there any one out there that can or does weld or pin the recoil lug to the receiver so i can turn it into a multi caliber id like to have a .308 and a 6.5 CM For it.

  • I find myself in a similar situation. I load my 308W ammo to 72mm which is 1mm (~40 thou) shorter than max magazine length. My chamber measures ~74.5mm total to the lands so that's about 2.5mm (~100 thou) jump. Why am I telling you this? Well, because I am green with envy that here, in South Africa, simply changing out a barrel is an extremely costly move that can take upwards of 12 months to get done and have the licence changed. So sleep well knowing you have an easy way out :)

  • yeah tough one, I'm glad i can spend 1000 or so and get it done quickly that's for sure. Good luck

  • There is a band aid fix for this problem that will help some. It is far from being as nice as a custom barrel, but it does help.

Alpha makes a type 2 mag that allows for longer seating depth. Something like 2.950". Then you can use a dremel and cut a notch in the bottom of your action to allow the longer rounds to feed through. This will buy you a few thousandths.

The cutter I used. A mill would do a much nicer job.

  • What rifle was that on 007?
    Certainly not the TacOps.

  • @hypo

Lol. No! I wouldn't touch a tac ops with any tools.

That is an Sps-v in an aics that I started out with. I sold it to help fund my DTA.

  • Not to put down ddd's fine dremeling abilities...but could a smith with a mill, mill out the reciever to match the opening of the mag body?

  • @norcal_in_az should, I thought about doing it to my rifle when it got chambered for 260.

Yes he can...and it would be much neater. I just didn't want to spend the money at the time to get it done.
