Redding Competition Dies Type S

I bought a brand new set of these for .223 Remington back at the estate sale for 25 bucks and only have used the seating die. I ordered a bushing that was the correct size for Remington brass that I was using to neck size with this die. I pulled it out yesterday and gave it a good cleaning and got the bushing in according to the instructions then realized it has an expander. Do you remove the expander or keep it in I was under the impression you only used a bushing? Without the expander it seems you will have lots of neck tension I haven't tried seating any bullets yet I just sized a couple of necks and stopped. Instruction don't say anything about removing it it's there for a reason. They just state you can use this die for a decapper by removing the bushing and it comes with a decapping pin reduced size holder.
Edit: It is actually a "Match" set

You can use bushing dies without the expander. I did it this way when I used wilson bushing dies. they don't even have an option for an expander or a decapping rod.
Whidden dies have a piece to replace the expander if you want to decap and not expand, but I use the expander on the whidden dies.
I quit using bushings because they left a donut on the brass at the top of the shoulder after about 4-5 firings.
-
@dddoo7 I can see how the donut will be created. The bushing doesn't size the neck the full length. I have other die sets for .223 I might try this one for a couple of load cycles. I have been shooting Federal Gold Medal Match brass anyway the bushing might not be the right diameter for this brass I haven't measured any loaded rounds yet. Thanks.

Using expander is usually a pretty good idea. Especially on factory dies.
-
@orkan Might do a comparison using a RCBS factory die and this die but with Remington brass. I need a bigger bushing for Federal it measured a little larger. I found out my Mitutoyo calipers are measuring .003 over in the less than one inch range playing around today. I checked them against a micrometer and a Starret caliper weird thing is they were within .0005 on a one inch gauge block. A few days ago the numbers were erratic and showed an error so I put a new battery in and it didn't change but it was kind of cold maybe in the high thirties today it fired right up but isn't accurate. It's old like me. :/
-
Inconsistencies with my caliper is what got me to digging.
I’ll look for the thread, but mine were fake.
-
@dddoo7 These are genuine I received them when I worked at the machine shop. I might buy a new one these definitely are having problems. I might clean the beam the scales on my readouts on the lathe recommend cleaning with a cloth and a light amount of WD 40 on it. Like I said they are old.

These are our new favorite "cheap" calipers around the shop. Auto on/off and stay moving smoother between cleanings/oilings.
They're usually $119-$129

@tscustoms I put the Starret set earlier on a wish list but you're correct that's a good price for the Mitutoyo. The auto feature sells it also. Think I will order one it should be here in a day or so. Thanks for the info.
-
@tscustoms That is a heck of a deal on those coolant proof Mitutoyos. I might need to jump on a couple more of them at that price. Anybody running a CNC knows why the need for the coolant proof. Are you certain they are legit?
-
@flyinphill I will have one in my sweaty little hand today after I go to the post office. I hope they are the real deal.

They're coming from the "Mitutoyo Store" on Amazon, so I would hope they are. I don't know how one would know for certain until they show up.

@tscustoms I suddenly want to run on a treadmill.
-
@tscustoms You can't know for sure unless you have them in hand. I thought you might have already bought a set and seen for yourself.
-
Looks like a caliper.
-
Is that supposed to be the coolant-proof ones linked above?
-
@bigfoot Also, can you tell me the part number on the box? is it:
500-752-20
-
@bigfoot I'm rather skeptical that the caliper you picture there is a knockoff. My battery cover does not like that, and I can't find a picture of a Mit caliper that looks like that, including checking their website.
-
@flyinphill That's the number on the case and the manual reads IP67 ABS Coolant Proof Caliper. It has a Mitutoyo QR Code stapled to the manual and we scanned it and it sent us to Mitutoyo Japan so I guess it's genuine. It came with a battery but not in the compartment and a genuine SR44 not a 357 or generic battery. I measured a Berger .224 and it was spot on I didn't drag out my one inch micrometer gauge but I would bet it is correct. My old one was good at one inch but not less. I have a feeling it might have been dropped somehow. It has a hard spot in the slide.

So you think I got hosed? Might as well today sucked.
-
@bigfoot It came with a tool for the battery cover and it even has an o ring in the cover. If it's a knock off it's a damn good one. My old Mitutoyo battery cover slides this one is a half turn type.

That was my initial reaction. All of my Mitutoyo coolant-proofs have a slide-on cover like all the others, with 2 screws on the back to tighten the watertight seal. I looked all over for pictures of the style he has, and could not find them anywhere on the US Mitutoyo site. But the European site has them, and now it looks like the Japanese site does as well.
So maybe Mitutoyo is changing the design but has not updated the website. Or maybe the US still has the version we have, but other markets are different, and this seller is sourcing non-US calipers. I don't know, but I now suspect they are legit.
