.308 Win 16" Covert Barrel 1/8 twist

  • Hi guys, I am going to development some loads for this barrel. I plan on using H4895 with 175 gr SMK's and Federal 210M primers. Have any of you had success with this combination of ingredients? Thanks in advance.

  • I don’t have experience with a barrel that short. My 308 barrel is 22” and I haven’t tried anything but varget in it.

I would try it and see what it does. Add powder slowly until you see pressure and see if you get the velocity you want.

    Is this for hunting?

  • My 308 has a 16" tube however it has a slower twist so I'm not much help with anything over 150 grains. I have used 4895 before I'll see what I have in my load book for this rifle. It is a bolt rifle and the barrel came off of Remington Sendero and was rethreaded for my action. You might get some impressive muzzle flash with the short barrel.

  • I have a 24" barrel in 8.5twist for a .308. I run imr4064 with 195tmk and 175 smk , only powder I use in my .308's. Off top of my head I think 42.1gr with 175 and 40.6gr with 195. Can double check tonight if needed.

  • H4895 is one of the go-to powders for 308. I think you'll likely have success. If not, Varget is a good place to try.

Both for long range target shooting and hunting as well. Thanks

Thanks. I have 4064 as well, so if I don't like the results with 4895, I will try it next.
