Does Primer Seating Depth Matter?
-
Blake with Reloading All Day asked me that question a while back, and I told him "absolutely, yes, unequivocally it does." Then that led to a lot more questions, which I answered best I could and then he set out to create an article on the topic. He did a pretty good job of it.

I thought it might be a good read for some of you that might not already know about this.
I also found it cool that he was able to run our CPS in-between clicks to achieve a consistent .0005" (five ten thousandths) adjustment.

Behold, what's that device attached to the digital indicator?
-
@bigfoot It's for reading primer depth.
-
@orkan It's prettier than the one I made:(
-
@bigfoot Oh, is that the "thing" you were talking about?
I had one previously made.... and still have ideas for a production model.
-
I never thought about using it to measure primer oal. Better than a caliper.
-
@bigfoot Yeah, setup right... it will measure pocket depth, primer thickness, and primer depth after seating.
-
@orkanPertaining to my chat? No that's a different fixture but is related to all this.
-
@bigfoot nice!

@orkan If I hadn't hauled all my tool holders off I could have one built in a few hours. It might be of some aid setting up the Lite model and I guess a way to check travel of the CPS and the incremental adjustment. You probably get the picture.

Good article -- No doubt priming depth matters (at least no doubt to me). A couple of other things that can influence ignition timing (referring to the time the pin ignites the primer after the trigger is pressed in this case) are shoulder setback, CBTO, and uniform primer pockets. I know most everyone knows all this but for newer reloaders its something to think about.
My 2 cents at least.

I just ordered the Accuracy One Primer Gauge along with their stand. I found it difficult to obtain easily readable measurements .... and I also thought it to be a terrific companion to my CPS. Thanks for posting a well informed article.
