Thrown into the Fire

John 15:6 says, “If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.”

John 15 uses the illustration of the vine and branches. Christ is the vine and we are the branches. Yesterday we noted that when we abide in Christ, we bear fruit and the only way that we can actually be meaningfully productive in life is to abide in Christ.

The above is the next verse. If we abide in Christ we bear fruit. If we don’t abide in Christ, we are dead spiritually and will be gathered and burned. If we don’t abide in the vine (Christ), then we don’t serve any spiritual purpose. Here is the difficult thing: we can be a pretty good person most of the time and still not abide in Christ. We can be an upstanding citizen and still not abide in Christ. Abiding in Christ means we submit to His will and obediently follow Him. We live like He lived. We love like He loved. We teach what He taught and thereby produce spiritual fruit. There are many benefits to abiding in Christ. One major one is that as long as we abide in Christ, we will not due Spiritually.
