2020 is the year of the unreasonable and illogical.
-
Anyone else notice that people have become even more illogical and unreasonable than they used to be?
Participating in forums has essentially become impossible. The ignorant and inexperienced are the majority, and they are the loudest and most frequent posters. So-called moderators have mental illnesses which cause them to escalate issues rather than calm them. When you confront someone with the truth, it enrages them.
Welcome to 2020 everyone. Misinformation seems to be the new currency, and people seem to be intentionally deluding themselves.

Some of the problem I've noticed is that people don't talk to gain knowledge. They talk to be right.
Now I'm one that has done this to, so maybe I shouldn't criticize.
A big problem I see over and over is people reading into what you say (not you directed at anyone just you in general). You can kind of do this in person where you have visual and other sensory cues. But on the internet that is lost. But more often then not in my experience it's comes from bad intentions or just wanting to be right.
Today's political climate doesn't help either, everything is so divided, and people think if you don't agree with them it's because of the worst intentions.
This is what I've experienced, and why I've largely moved away from forums. If I need something from them its generally already been discussed and if not I'll ask here first, if yet to not get an answer.

Forum participation by those with experience is dwindling. There's no question about that. People want to have somewhere to ask questions and get real answers. Yet how can real answers be found when all of the people with any experience remain silent? No reasonable person with experience will deal with unreasonable people willingly. So, they simply stop participating. Those without experience, share their baseless opinions as if it is fact, and meet no resistance, forming a positive feedback loop.
http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/cps’s-are-back-in-stock.4006960/
There you'll find a thread full of opinions about our priming tool. The detractors have never touched a CPS in their lives, yet there they are making claims and speaking as if their opinion is fact. Even today I wake up to read posts from people claiming hand tools or some deprecated bench tools with rudimentary add-ons are better. The CPS is the undisputed best in the world at its job, if you ask anyone that owns one. ... and if there can be no agreement on that, then what possible hope for agreement can there be on issues where the truth is far more difficult to discover? People can't be troubled to gain the tiniest bit of experience before forming opinions on anything. Then they anchor into that belief and refuse all proof to the contrary whenever it suits them.
This behavior within society will bring about disaster. It's worse now than ever before. The ignorant truly have taken control of the world. People are making up their realities daily, as kingdoms unto themselves. Facts and experience are not entering into the equation at all. The price of participation for those with experience is too high.
There are simply precious few people that care about anything, much less pursuit of truth. Anyone that speaks up on the behalf of truth, is ridiculed relentlessly. It's simply not worth the aggravation. Every day, someone calls me for advice and then resists or flat out refuses to listen to the answer they specifically called me to get. Every. Day. I put more rounds down range by lunchtime than they will this year... yet they seem to know better than I. It's extremely discouraging. Were it not for those precious few people I talk to that genuinely search for the truth... I'd have long since stopped talking to people about anything I'm passionate about. Those precious few, seem to make it worthwhile. Though I often wonder for how much longer.
Meanwhile, forums are plugged with "reviews" from people that couldn't possibly look more uncomfortable and inexperienced behind a rifle. Just the other day I saw a guy doing "accuracy review" of a rimfire... harris bipod fully extended, back arched way up off the ground, bolt manipulation and breathing technique completely compromised. ... and this guy is considered by many to be an authority on the subject! lol shakes head With "experts" like this constantly plastering themselves all over, it's no wonder to me that people are apprehensive.
How I long for communication with people that are truly in a search for fact by gaining the experience necessary to realize it when they find it. How tired I have become of peoples fragile inexperienced positions in an attempt to gain an audience.

One thing I've been thinking the last few months (especially now that I am trying not to buy stuff made in china) is that the Internet in general is becoming more and more useless.
Some of it is knowledgeable people leaving, but its more then that.
The other day I was interested in what a good sewing machine would cost so I could hem and fix my pants and other clothes. For three pages on Google it was just Top 10 Listicles that I would guess are written by AI. I don't even think people are writing this stuff. Just worthless garbage. I've begun trying to narrow such inquiries to older forum posts, or older blogs. Most things that are newer then 3 or 4 years is worthless.
I dread having to try and use the internet to find a worthwhile item, most information I find can't be trusted and most items are Chinese crap.

@rhyno My wife a sewing genius has 2 Bernina sewing machines. Of course she has her own business and sews every day. When I went with her to pick up her last one I almost fell over at the price, but when she told me how all the features and functions saved her time and money I was in.
-
@rhyno I agree. The internet, is becoming more useless by the day.
The reasons why are easy to see, from where I'm sitting. The main one, is lack of accountability. The anonymous nature and complete detachment from consequence for poor behavior online, leads to all of this.
I remember doing reverse look-up on phone numbers on the internet around the year 2000. Someone would call, and I'd want to know who it was, so I'd just look the number up on the net. It was miraculous. Try to look up a phone number right now. Nothing but scam sites.

Greg since I have been on the forum and have had many conversations with you on the why for some equipment I have dramatically improved my shooting. My reloading is much more precise and accurate, not alone faster. (time is money). The guns and calibers I have are due to multiple conversations and everyone does what I was looking for it to do.
In my professional life I have found every customer wants 3 things. highest quality, best service and cheapest price. I have never been able to get all 3. Which one do you want to give up.
Keep the faith your knowledge has helped me dramatically and I am sure many others.

Though those that call to get their hollow opinions validated will be met with very swift dismissal.

I don't understand the logic, if the higher end stuff wasn't better then it would just be a scam by lapua and eley, I would think they'd be the ones to know, and if they weren't right in this litigious world someone would have sued them by now.
(I'm speaking not from knowledge here just thoughts) 22lr rifles are reaching performance levels of centerfires (to an extent) but the ammo costs are still under half. $25 for 50 of the highest grade match ammo? Hell if I could get center fire for that much I'd never reload again.

UNREASONABLE LOGIC:
Ad Hoc Rescue
Description: Very often we desperately want to be right and hold on to certain beliefs, despite any evidence presented to the contrary. As a result, we begin to make up excuses as to why our belief could still be true, and is still true, despite the fact that we have no real evidence for what we are making up.
Friends, be logical!

UNREASONABLE LOGIC:
Gadarene Swine Fallacy
Description: The assumption that because an individual is not in formation with the group, that the individual must be the one off course. It is possible that the one who appears off course is the only one on the right course.
Friends, be logical!

You can also read up on the Dunning Krueger effect, and the Gell-Man Amnesia effect.
"In the field of psychology, the Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with low ability at a task overestimate their ability. It is related to the cognitive bias of illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability. Without the self-awareness of metacognition, people cannot objectively evaluate their competence or incompetence."
"Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”

I've been talking about the dunning kruger effect for years.
