Badger vs 17WSM
-
Had to pull this badgers permit with the 17WSM today. He was trespassing in the back yard. 17WSM laid him out flat at 110yds.
-
@orkan Great pic Orkan has RimX started to build their 17wsm version yet.
-
That is awesome! I really want to shoot one of those at some point. Would be really cool stuffed and sitting on a self!
-
Ran into one of those once. Ridiculously bad attitude for its size. Hard to kill without a firearm.
-
@steelbanger I have no doubt they started. Not available yet though.

That's about four good shaving brushes right there...

Since this thread was resurrected... I might as well post him in his new home! :)
Sitting on top of my Klipsch center channel in my theater room.

@orkan Well, I suppose you don't really need a shaving brush... ;)

No I suppose not. ;)

@orkan Cruising the hills in your Dodge Ram - great way to spend some time!
Is that the 17 WSM? I would like to know more about the current state of the caliber. How many actual manufacturers are there (not just rebranded)? What does your rifle like best? What is the group size difference between brands and bullet weights? Does lot testing work? What does a great group look like at 50, 100, and 200 yards. What does the velocity profile look like over those same differences. How far out does it reach before slipping into sub-sonic. Maybe you could put some answers in the 17 WSM thread to resurrect it.

Yes that's my 17WSM. The caliber is in the same place the 17HMR was early on. People have no clue what they are missing... so they marginalize it and try to convince others that it's pointless.
All ammo is produced by winchester, regardless of box/brand.
This rifle likes everything. Good lots shoot good, bad lots shoot bad. Good groups are sub 1/2 moa. Bad groups are 1.5 moa.
Here's a 5-shot group at 300yds.
Lot testing does work, and is recommended. I prefer the 20gr offering at 3000fps. I'd rate the maximum effective range of the 17WSM at 400yds, on something like a prairie dog... which is heavily dependent on conditions. It's extremely capable out to 250yds, and inside 150yds, it's just point and click. Amazingly effective and lethal.

@orkan Thanks for the information Greg!

@shakeyhand hey Shakey, Greg built me one and I couldn't be happier. I've been interested ever since Winchester came out with the round. I had an Anschutz 1717HB in 17HMR ... a wonderful rifle, in my opinion the best 17HMR made. But I wanted a flatter shooting, more effective round out to 300 yards without having to do a lot of scope adjusting to do so. I wound up giving the Anny to a very close friend of mine that uses it to this day to remove critters from his ranch. Had Scott Volquarsen's 17WSM semi-auto, but I'm deep inside a bolt action sort of guy. Scott's rifle was very accurate, I just dreaded the takedown. Volquartsen no longer offers their 17WSM rifle.
The McMillan stock with the RimX 17WSM action topped with a Tangent Theta 3-15x50 just can't be beat! I was pushing Greg towards the more power 5-25x56 thinking I need the extra "sight enhancement" of power. Let me assure you that for hunting, and even paper shooting, the 3-15x50 set at 10 power is perfect. Only on 50 yard close targets do I have to adjust the focus ... this is rare. I leave my scope set at 10/infinity. The parallax never needs adjusting for most all shots if set this way. It's phenomenal!!!
I have a fixation in my head towards the 25 grain bullet. But Greg is right, the RimX will eat either 20 or 25 and spit them very accurately on the spot. As a primarily rimfire shooter since the mid 90's, I would not hesitate, not one bit, to have Greg build me a 17WSM.
Most of my shooting is hunting paper targets at a range. I don't have the luxury of available, safe shooting onto land here in Southeast Louisiana. I am going to give hunting nutria a whirl, but I just know from a lifetime of fishing down here that the very real possibility of someone fishing just a mere 100-200 yards downrange past that nutria is worrisome.
But, I'll pose this question to both you @shakeyhand and Greg @orkan ..... what do you two think of a RimX Target rifle??? Will it outperform the hunter style in overall accuracy? Meaning would it in most instances be just a paper shooter or could it outperform the hunter in the field at 300 or so yards? Does the accuracy greatly diminish once out to 300 yards and beyond? We don't have the selection of multiple manufacturers and brands of ammo like 22LR has .... for 17WSM it's just Winchester with the possibility of limited lot selection (at least these days of limit ammo availability). I love the ease and simplicity of rimfire ammo. But at 300 yards and past, maybe go 22 centerfire. I guess I'm just curious because I don't know if it has ever been done. In my mind, there are good reasons to pursue a 17WSM Target rifle .... but I also have to be truthful with myself .... what is the objective?
Regardless, a target 17WSM topped with a Tangent Theta 5-25x56 .... oh, I'd shiver to be a chuckling prairie dog out at 300 yards.
Then again, with Greg behind the wheel, a 300 yard prairie dog doesn't have much of a chance given the steel target he posted!

I built a heavy (18lb) 17WSM. The accuracy/precision was no different than the sporter rifle you own. Ran 3 different heavy barrels on it, but there were no differences between any of them. That's why I elected to not even offer them in the future.

As long as the wind isn't blowing! That's the only thing I hate about 17WSM... I wish it cut the wind like a 300PRC. lol
-
Maybe this is a wind defying product that's been around as long as I can remember ..... if the product resembles its name, maybe so !!!!!
Spray some on your rimfire bullets and see if they buck the wind ...... WindEx

@buddhaman LOL...

@shakeyhand
I made a mistake on the model of Anschutz that I had. I previously stated that it was a 1717 HB .... my mistake, it was a 1717 D. Thanks and take care.

@shakeyhand
There's not a lot of difference between the Anschutz 1717D and the 1717HB. Both are Model 54 actions, the D is a single stage trigger whereas the HB is a double. The 1717D can be purchased with either the varmint (heavy) barrel or the sporter barrel. And the 1717HB is as the initials imply, a heavy barrel.
My 1717D was the varmint style. At the time, I think I remember paying somewhere around $1500.00 for the rifle. I may have enjoyed shooting the sporter version over the varmint .... the varmint rifle weight was a little on the heavy side for my liking. But I didn't do much of any research as to the offerings of the rifle other than having had prior experience and pleasure of the model 54 and the single stage trigger. It was and remains an excellent shooter!

@buddhaman That had me laughing for two minutes straight!
