Acorns

A pig was eating acorns under an oak tree. When he ate all of them that were on top of the ground, he began to root around in the ground below the tree. The cow told him, “you should not do this. If you dig up the roots of the tree, then the tree will whither and die.” “Let it die”, the pig replied. “Who cares as long as there are acorns to eat?”

When we look at our lives today we are truly blessed. We are currently living in a time when factories are shut down, slaughter houses are closed, and food is becoming more difficult to find. However even in these difficult times we have not gone hungry. We may not have the exact food that we want, but we have not gone hungry. We have been blessed to have enough food and more to spare.

When we look at our economy we are truly blessed. We are currently living in a time when many businesses are closed, many are struggling to find work, and it seems our economy has collapsed. However even in these difficult times we have more physical blessings than most countries in the world.

When we look in our country we are truly blessed. We are living in a time when bakers are sued for not baking cakes, prayers are removed from schools, and Muslims are given preference. However in these difficult times we still have freedom of religion. We are not being forced to change the way we live. We are not being punished for following God. We are allowed to peacefully gather and worship.

I truly believe that America is the greatest country in the world. We have freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and a free market. We have opportunities that people in most countries only dream of having. We are truly a blessed nation. Do we ever stop and think about why we are a blessed nation? Are we a blessed nation because we picked ourselves up by our own bootstraps? Are we a blessed nation because we separated from oppressive England and became a democracy? Are we a blessed nation because our founding fathers decided it would be?

While all of these things are factors in why we are a blessed nation, the reality is we are a blessed nation because God has blessed us. James 1:17 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, or shadow of turning.” We are blessed with all of these good things because God has blessed us.

Now, as our country slowly turns away from God, what will happen to those blessings? Will God continue to bless a wicked nation? Will God continue to provide for a people who want nothing to do with Him? But who needs God? Who really needs God when we have this great, powerful, strong nation? Who really needs God to provide us with food when we have our own grocery stores? Who needs God to provide our freedoms when we have our own constitution? So as our nation slowly pushes God out of the country, we slowly kill the tree that provides us with the acorns we so desperately need.

Our country has been slowly turning away from God for some time now. How do we change it? How do we turn it back? We change one person at a time. We change ourselves. We turn back to God. We trust God, we put Him first, we obey Him. We demand righteousness in our lives. We work to change others. We teach, encourage, instruct, and plead with people until they can see the truth. God provides the acorns. God provides the blessings. If we push God out of our world, then His blessings will eventually cease as well.
