TS Customs RimX Build - The first 1000 rounds.
-
Today I spent 1000 rounds in one afternoon with the RimX. Not a single failure to feed, extract, or eject. I went to chamber one round, and it jammed up in the chamber. Upon removal and inspection, the bullet had a big glob of lead or something on one side of it. Bad bullet. It happens. Other than the trigger not wanting to drop the sear for some reason... it was absolutely amazing. I don't want to stop shooting it, but the wind is really coming up now. This action from Zermatt Arms is everything I hoped it would be. (except for that damn swept bolt handle) ;) I'll get a run of straight handles made if it's the last thing I do. lol
Specs: TS Customs build - McMillan A5A stock w/hawkins bottom metal. Triggertech diamond (which was having issues). Barrel is 26" MTU Benchmark 3-groove 16.5 twist, 22LR Primal 2° chamber. Tangent Theta 525P in a Hawkins Heavy tactical 1-piece.
Here's a couple pages full of 10-shot groups, in a pushy wind, with random lot numbers (several) of RWS R50. Some lots shot great, others not so much. The sighters and score box is eley tenex. The top row of top target is eley match. The rest are RWS R50. I'll hopefully get a calm day here in the next few weeks to do some real accuracy testing... after I get a trigger in it that functions properly every shot. lol
If you're in the market for the best 22lr repeater on planet earth... we'll have some in stock in a few months. :) Zermatt RimX is the apex of the 22lr industry!
-
Stopped in to see how Drew and Travis were coming on this. Absolutely love those mags. Can't wait til I get one in my A10. Not a fan of the swept bolt handle either, get on the design for the straight! Nice rig Greg!!
-
@orkan Outstanding looking rifle Greg.Any plans on putting one in the A3 stock. Also is that action as smooth as silk.
-
Yes I’ll be doing one in an A3A.
-
-
Very nice eye candy Greg.
-
Greg any word when the RimX will be available in 17 WSM.
-
@steelbanger It'll be a few months. Rest assured I'll have one for eval as soon as possible.
-
Beautiful rifle, Greg.
What are the barrel specs; chamber, twist rate and profile?

Read the first post please, its there, about midway through.
-
@orkan Will be looking forward to your eval on the 17WSM.
-
@orkan Guess I missed that due to rifle envy and day dreaming of what life was like when I lived in a free state....or, perhaps suffering from advanced CRS.
That horizontal full rifle photo would make a very fine poster.

The business end of the RimX bolt.
-
Out of curiosity, why the 525P this time? It seems like most of your rimfires have something besides a TT due to parallax.
-
Looks like the extractor is pretty easy to change out if need be. Also bottom firing pin instead of top is different.

Yeah, quite easy to change extractor. The 6 O'clock firing pin is said to make for more consistent ignition, which leads to better accuracy.
-
-
Wow super easy. Seems like it would be a nice candidate for a switch barrel rig if someone needed something more than 22lr.
-
@orkan Just curious on your views of cleaning a .22. As per Travis on the centerfire comp rifles I've had and don't clean after break in, would you do the same with your rimfire comp rifles too? I know the cheaper rimfire stuff can be nasty dirty, we are using the Norma Match in our team rifles currently and I cleaned my CZ after about 100 rounds just to see what she looked like and only dirtied about 5 passes till they pushed clean. Thoughts on this Greg?
-
I'll clean if necessary... but if its shooting tight, I won't. I'll clean the action of course, as they can get gummed up, but I leave the chamber and barrel alone unless I have reason. I have one 40X with upwards of 25,000 rounds on it and I haven't touched the barrel... and it still shoots in the .2's.

Downright unpleasant winter conditions out... so, an opportunity to function test the RimX in sub-freezing temps. Absolutely horrific 22lr shooting conditions. Wind chill was about 5 degrees above zero. Sun was out evaporating the snow like crazy, which was causing absurd amounts of mirage, and the wind was blasting on me 13-20mph. It was cold, and unpleasant. Anyway... I laid down, shot for group size, and shot up a box of R50. The RimX didn't miss a beat. 100% function.
I cried tears of joy. ... or maybe it was the wind freezing my eyeballs. In either event, they froze to my face before they hit my beard. I called it quits. ;)
-
Any plans to try the Norma Match in this beauty?

You mean RWS? ;)
Norma = RWS = RUAG. I'm not sure which grades they are reboxing for norma, but it sure as heck is not part of their premium line. I shoot R50 and R100 from time to time in rifles that like it. So in that respect, I'm already shooting "norma" in this rifle. :)

The business end of the RimX bolt.
The profile on the insert held in by the hex head cap screw is interesting looking. At first it looked crudely done but there must be a purpose for its shape. I see what appears to be marks made from an end mill and some strange colors from anodizing? Not that it matters. I am assuming that is what is changed to switch calibers.
-
Oh my.
Go away for a while and come back to some really neat news.
-
@bigfoot said in TS Customs RimX Build - The first 1000 rounds.:

It's made out of spring steel. Very limited finishing options available. That's why it looks "strange."
@bigfoot said in TS Customs RimX Build - The first 1000 rounds.:

Pretty sure the entire bolt nose gets swapped.
-
@orkan I think that piece is called a tensioner. Regardless, this is something worth saving up for glad to see you have one to test drive. :)
-
@bigfoot said in TS Customs RimX Build - The first 1000 rounds.:

Why is it called a tensioner? It extracts. lol
-
@orkan I don't know. I watched a video of Zermatt at the Shot Show and the representative was demonstrating the bolt and he said something about a tensioner I assumed the other piece is an extractor. Just trying to get a grip on how this thing works. That piece held in with the screw doesn't look like there is clearance for the case head to fit between it and the bolt face. If in fact it does, yep, it's an extractor. That guy stripped the bolt in about ten seconds and put it back together as fast. I wanna see a barrel get "dropped in" too. :/
-
Ok, about a minute into the video. I wasn't dreaming.
-
Any update on the trigger -- seems like its running good now.
-
The tensioner is the little claw on the OTHER side of the bolt. Silver looking one. The copper looking one with set screw through it is the extractor. ... and it DOES capture the rim. Might not look it, but it does.
-
@tan_90 Got a new trigger, but I haven't installed it yet. I just screwed with the weight adjustment a bunch on the one thats in it... and it seemed to come around.
I have a tac sport pro coming that I really wanna try out.
-
I posted in the SH 6x5 thread. ... and just to make sure none of the unwashed there cried foul... I recorded the attempt, cold bore.
Never had much luck for rimfire precision in the cold... but I figure its time to post a 6x5.
If I knew how to count... one group would have been in the zero's. I'm certain the rifle will do better than indicated today. :)TS Customs RimX Rifle

@orkan Got it, thanks.
-
@orkan Do you think the firing pin location is playing a role in the potential accuracy of this design? Might just be where it has to go due to the design of the bolt. What's the saying, think outside of the box? Maybe ignition is better from the bottom.
-
@bigfoot 6:00 ignition has long since been thought of as a good idea. This rifle has the potential to shoot better than any 22lr I’ve owned. I just need some nice days to find out.

@orkan Premium components from stem to stern for sure. The bar is really getting set high now for 22's. Nice days are coming we usually have an Easter blow down here and we got it. It was 92 degrees when we arrived at our ranch Sunday and when we left Tuesday it was 49 and blowing up to thirty. Today's forecast for the coast where I live is 76 degrees and light north east winds around 5 mph.
-
It would be nice if ballistic-x would allow you to do groups of groups instead of having to do each damn one at a time -- annoys me.
-
Could you possibly expand on the 2 degree chamber please.
-

Sure can, and I hope you'll let us build you one!
Here's what's in my rifle in this thread.
We also will have a 1.5° (or 1°30 for those picky types) version of that chamber available.
The 2° chamber was born from Wayne and I, and has been proven to work quite well. I have no reason to believe the 1.5° will be any different. :)
-
@orkan That thing flat out shoots. So did you choose or design this reamer?
I will be calling, I am thinking Masterpiece Chassis to match my long guns.

Wayne and I came up with it one day in his shop. :)

Thanks Greg for taking the time to put the video together. The RimX looks like a very special rimfire.
-
Excellent video indeed.
Curious if you are using the swaro phone adapter for your spotter video work?

Yup.
-
100% controlled round feed. Others say theirs is the only design that does this with rim fire. Have you ejected any live rounds and looked for deformation? Looks like they go straight in.
