The whole world is wicked

1 John 5:18-19 says, “We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.”

I know we are saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). I know that we cannot save ourselves from the sin that we have committed. It requires the sacrifice of Christ and His blood to be free forgiven of our sins. When we are baptized, we access that blood and are born again. Yet it is not a physical birth as Nicodemas thought (John 3:1-6), but rather a spiritual birth. Through baptism we are spiritually born of God.

As Christians who are born of God, we must keep ourselves out of sin. God has forgiven our sins and given us grace, but that grace and forgiveness is not so that we can live in sin. Grace is so that we can live free from sin. We don’t have to do wrong. We can do right and God makes sure that we can do right. Yet we have to make the choice to do right. We can not compromise even in one area. We must choose to do right in all things.

The world is in wickedness. The world doesn’t know the purity and righteousness that is in Christ. We cannot live and act like the world and be righteous. We must live different than the world. We must live without sin.
