Tower of Pisa

The leaning tower of Pisa is a 183 foot tall tower in Italy. It is 296 steps to the top of the tower and the walls are just over 8 feet thick. It has an estimated weight of 14,500 tons! The foundation is a mere 10 feet deep. The tower began to lean during construction in the 12th century due to soft ground which was not sufficient to support the weight of the building. It has continued to lean more and more each year ever since. By 1990, the tilt had reached 5.5 degrees and required stabilization and rebuilding between 1993 and 2001. Ironically, “Pisa” means “marshy land”.

The fault is not in the design of the building. The 8 feet thick walls are more than enough to support the weight above. While the tower is tall, it is not too tall to support the weight. The problem rests in the lack of a solid foundation. A short 10’ deep in the marshy area was not nearly sufficient enough to get down to solid ground. It is interesting that the foundation is the part of the building that is never seen. Most people don’t even think about the foundation until the building begins to lean or crumble and fall, yet the foundation is one of the most important parts of the building. Without a solid foundation buildings will shift, lean, and eventually crumble.

Without a solid foundation, our lives will crumble as well. If we don’t build our character on a solid foundation it will eventually show in our lives. Jesus said in Matthew 7:20, “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them”. If our spiritual foundation is not what it should be, then it will eventually come out in our lives. Jesus Christ must be our foundation. 1 Corinthians 3:11 says, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Most people that believe in Jesus will quickly say that He is their foundation. We like the idea of Jesus being our foundation and like to think that we have built our character, lives, and families on the solid spiritual foundation of Jesus Christ. Have you ever considered what is required in order for one to actually have Jesus as their foundation? In order for Jesus to be our foundation, we must build where He is and align to His teaching and principles. Just believing in Jesus does not mean that we have built our life on Him as our foundation. In order to build on the spiritual foundation of Christ, we must love as He loved, sacrifice as He sacrificed, teach what He taught, and live as He lived. Our entire life must focus on being the Christian that Jesus demands.

After a building is built, the foundation is rarely seen, thought about, or noticed unless there is a problem. Yet once there is a problem with the structure of a building it becomes very apparent that there is a problem with the foundation. If we are spiritually struggling in our lives, then there is a problem with our foundation and we need to go back and make major changes in our lives in order to make sure that Christ is our foundation. Also, Christ as the foundation is not seen except through us. When we live as we should spiritually, we teach, lead, and influence others towards Christ. When we live as we should, it becomes obvious to those around us that we are on a solid foundation and therefore by our lives Christ is glorified.

How is your spiritual life? Are you as strong as you should be? Are you as strong as you could be? Are you growing spiritually? Do you often find that your spiritual life is crumbling? The only way we can be successful spiritually is when we trust Jesus and build on Him as the one and only solid foundation!
