Magnets

I have always found magnets interesting. I have a couple of rather large magnets that are quite powerful and they are fun to play with. When the magnets are separated they could easily be mistaken for a non-magnetic object, yet the closer together they get the more they pull themselves together. Once they get too close together they can’t be stopped from joining and it is very difficult to keep them from slamming together. Once they are joined together it is quite difficult to get them apart again.

Have you ever noticed that the closer we get to God the harder it is for the world to pull us away. There is a constant force pulling us away from God and trying to devour us. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” Satan uses our own lusts and desires as grips as he continually tries to pull us away from God. However, the closer we get to God, the more difficult it is for Satan to pull us away from Him. James 4:7-8 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. [8] Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”

So how do we draw nigh and get closer to God? There are four things outlined in the above verses that show how we draw nigh to God. When we do these things we will continually grow closer to God and like the magnets be more difficult to pull away.
Submit to God— trust God. Trust His will. Realize that He wants what is best for us and follow Him. Submit to His will for our lives.
Resist the devil— Drawing nigh to God is going to require some effort on our part. God wants us to come to Him but it requires that we resist the forces of Satan that are trying to pull us away from God.
Draw nigh to God— This goes hand in hand with submitting to God. One can fully realize that they should submit to God without actually taking action in their lives to move closer to Him. We draw nigh to God by studying His word. We draw nigh to God by doing what is right. We draw nigh to God by helping others. We draw nigh to God by striving to be like God.
Cleanse your hands— We can never be close to God unless we are willing to give up our sins. This requires a complete change in our way of thinking which leads to a change of actions. This requires that we put God first in every aspect of our lives and that we strive to live sinless. This means that we no longer tolerate the things in our lives that we know we shouldn’t and we change the way we live.

It is God’s desire that we follow Him and go to heaven. God has provided the way and is a continual force in our lives. We can either move toward Him and farther from Satan, or we will move away from Him. Like magnets, the further away from God we get, the easier it is to keep going. The closer to God we get, the stronger we become. How close to God are you?
