Browning BAR 300win mag ammo recommendation
-
Just trying to figure out what a browning bar 300win mag semi auto would like for ammo? I'm shooting some winchester super x 180gr power points, but it's grouping 3" average at 100yds. Also the soft noses are causing jamming. I have some 210gr NABLR's I could try reloading with imr 4831 or h1000, but would prefer to just feed it factory ammo that shoots 1moa or better. Anyone have experiance with this rifle or 300win semi autos?
-
@donnie I think you'll be asking a lot of that pencil barrel auto to produce 1moa. You could get lucky with ammo, but that's what I'd consider it... luck.
Those that I've worked with will do 1.5 MOA pretty consistent, but sub 1" at 100 isn't something you're going to see a lot of, if at all.
-
@orkan this is just a rifle I've had in the safe for a while, so if it won't do better then 3 moa I'll take it for what it's worth. It's light, fits in the quad rifle case and won't hurt my feelings if it gets damaged. What ammo got you to 1.5moa?
-
@donnie Federal is usually a good bet. The main thing is finding a bullet it likes. I'd focus on the light weight offerings in the 140'ish median grain weights.
-
@orkan holy shit, 140 gr bullet out of a 300win mag is moving fast! You really like the lightning strikes don't you. I wonder if Federal loads barnes ttsx? Gonna look into it.
-
@donnie You might have luck with the nosler 150's. Or something in the 155 category.
That shorter range performance is what you're after with that rifle anyway, and I think you'll find the light recoil of the semi auto with those lighter bullets will be just the ticket.

ooooooh, I wouldn't be afraid to give this stuff a go:
-
@orkan Thanks for the recommendations, ill see what I can find up here.

I have the same rifle. I shoot 150gr federals out of it. they are about all the rifle is capable of doing anyways. after 1st shot your group will open up because of the barrel heating up. I trust mine 100% out to 300yds, but only with the 1st shot.

On a target the size of a paper plate, yes?

@twitch
That doesn’t make much sense, 1 shot is not considered a group
-
@bull81 Made sense to me. First shot goes quite close to where you want. Every subsequent shot will crawl away from POA. Thus group size suffers the more you shoot. Pretty sure that's what he was trying to say. As in, it's not a rifle to be shooting groups with. lol
I never saw browning claiming that setup was a "precision rifle," so as long as a guy operates within its capabilities... a guy can be happy. :) Not my cup of tea though. I shot a prairie dog in the head at 680yds today.
-
That makes sense. The way it was worded through me off.
-
Prairie dogs are under about 10” of snow up here today. Snow should be gone in a couple days though.
All I could find for now are 165gr Barnes Vor-tx, and Winchester deer season 150gr factory shells. I’ll see how they shoot this weekend. Lots of 180-210gr factory offerings on the shelves though.
-
@orkan yes on a target that size. not for sure, but.... if I put a better optic on it I would think it would get better. but that's just a theory.
-
@twitch I was able to shoot 2 groups of 2, that were 1/2” groups, but 4” apart lol. That was at 100yds. Other groups were around 3”. Definitely a minute of deer gun. I probably wouldn’t shoot further than 300yds max with this gun if I can get the groups down to 1 1/2 MOA.
