Rice in flash hole? No problem.
-
I didn't inspect my .223AI brass well enough after tumbling, and I must have had a kernel of rice stuck in the flash hole in a case. When I seat the primer on the CPS I could feel the rice kernel get crushed. I took a light and looked inside the case and the flash hole was completely blocked by the rice. It was smashed in there and totally plugging it. I set that case aside so I could fire it with some normal rounds to see how it did.
Didn't seem to affect ignition at all. The round with the rice in it landed better than a couple of my other shots. The round with the rice landed in the middle of the bottom three there. With the .223AI being a fairly small case... it's very prone to ignition issues and small variables affecting its performance. It was a good test to see just what would happen in the event some rice plugs up the flash hole. I probably could have done a better job of shooting. It's 100 degrees out and just plain miserable. I was mentally not in the moment with these shots.

I actually did the exact same thing in my brother creedmoor a few weeks back. We set the few rounds aside that had rice blocking the flash hole. He shot them later that day and it had no ill affect either. I was actually pretty impressed.

Just another reason why rice is the perfect tumbling media. :)
For those of you that haven't used it, here's the rice you need: http://amzn.to/2acofXY

Just started using this rice tonight. Impressed with how the dasher brass came out. Smells pretty good too, Liked not having small bits of walnut or corn cob media not clinging to anything that can hold a static charge for a bonus.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever lodged a piece of corn cob media in the flash hole and tried & confirmed successfully that the powder will ignite and fire a bullet?
I too have switched to rice.

Primal Rice is the way. Made my brass cleaning so much easier. The good thing is you can feel rice in the primer if it’s there as opposed to other media types.
