Compressed charges

  • Just started loading some 300wsm with 208 gr ELD-M and H1000, and realized I'm going to be getting into compressed charges. My COAL is 3.090" that puts me .020 off the lands, so I have a little more room that most cases would have. How do compressed charges act when shooting a pressure ladder, anything additional to note?

  • One thing to note is that as you get compression, your bullet will start to be seated longer and you'll have to dial that seating stem a bit deeper to offset. Keep close eye on this. The way you put the powder in the case will change how it settles and how much compression you have.

Watch the pressure signs close. Push past pressure a bit to make sure it's stable and not going to spike unpredictably.

  • @orkan would you be loading in smaller steps as you start getting compressed? I'm at 67.5 gr and will probably start to be compressed at 68. I usually shoot .5 gr increments when initially looking for nodes, then I'll fine tune in .3gr. Should I start going in .3gr as I start compressing powder?

Nothing wrong with that method. Compressed or not. You'll find you run out of ability to put more powder in before things get haywire usually.
