Just a little blizzard

Powers out at my place (backup generator is up and going for now) and multiple other places.
I expect some of those poles to be snapped off come morning with the freezing rain and 50mph winds.

We got lucky and it got cold enough to keep the snow from freezing on the lines like that.
It's still blowing 35-40 here. Has been since yesterday. Some big drifts out there.

@flyinphill northern Nebraska, we have power out all over the place, wind and snow today, those guys out there working on power lines, man I wouldn’t want that job, I didn’t see them working on my road until I was within two power poles that’s how low visibility was.

We didn't lose power. Thankfully it got cold enough before the snow and wind started in heavy.
There are massive drifts everywhere. It's been very peaceful out in the country. I love it when these massive blizzards happen, because we finally get a day or two of calmness. I haven't seen a single vehicle drive by since all this started. That's nice. :)
Wind blasted drifts are rock hard out there. You can walk over them and not sink... like concrete. Makes for some interesting snow removal. The bobcat is warming up as I type this. I'll add to the huge pile I pushed yesterday since everything blew in during the night again.

Yesterday was 82, sunny, and calm. Today when I walked out of the house, it was high 70's, overcast with angry storm clouds, and wind steady at 15-20 with gust about 30-35. The wind was hot, heavy, and super-humid. If someone had put me in a time machine and dropped me at a random time and asked me to guess the month, I would have said September. It felt just like it does when we are catching the remnants of a hurricane or tropical storm in the Fall. I would have never guessed anytime in the Spring.
Now the wind has picked up more to about 25 steady with 40+ gusts, and we have had tornado warnings in the last hour. There is also a chill in the air, with an expected high of only low 50 tomorrow. That is about a 25 degree swing in one day. This is the edge of the same system dropping the snow on everyone else.

Here in Calgary, Alberta, we just say "if you don't like the weather, give it a couple hours". I've been outside when it goes from +20 to -13 in under an hour. We also have chinooks which can cause migranes, wind, but usually warmer weather. Right now I'm working in Kananaskis in a valley where wind in the 30-120km/hr range is normal. When you see trees ripping out of the ground, you don't really feel safe lol.

@donnie I have seen a show on the Chinook winds. I don't remember the exact details, but somewhere in North or South Dakota there was a change of about 50F in 2 minutes.

@flyinphill how far does tornado alley stretch? @rhyno Are you guys in that area? We are starting to see tornados regularly in and around calgary. Hopefully we all have a mild year for tornados and hail.

@donnie we’re on the edge of it I think.
I’ve never seen a tornado, seem to miss them, I’ve been really close to them but never seen one. We get a lot of warnings and watches though so some day.

@donnie I have seen different maps of tornado alley, and while NC is technically in the active tornado zone, I think that the "alley" refers to the path from east Texas up through Arkansas/Oklahoma/Kansas/etc up to maybe South Dakota.
But we do have some tornadoes. I had a good friend get hit by one about 25 years ago. He heard the infamous train sound and ran into an interior closet and hid. When he came out a couple of minutes later, the closet was still standing but the house around him was gone. No other house hit, just his. He took it as an omen and moved to Chicago.

@orkan Remember that was 25 years ago. It was a lot different place then. Why he is still there, I can't answer that. I haven't talked to him in a long while, might be a good excuse to catch up.

25 years ago, it was still worse than almost everywhere else in the country... but I digress.
I really need to stop saying anything when people talk about those that live in cities. The last thing in the world I want is for city dwellers to move into the country.

Sometimes in the spring the wind can feel like someone's turning on the hot and then cold water when you're in the shower. Spring can be quite angry around here.
