Upgrade Calipers

Orkan
I saw your calipers in the video you just posted and I've been thinking about upgrading my RCBS to something more accurate if it makes sense.
I heard that there are some counterfeit units posing as high end stuff.

What level of accuracy should we be looking for in a caliper to measure base to ogive etc? Does the model you had in the vid fit the bill? If not which one?
-
Are there reliable distributers out there that we can be comfortable with that will sell us the real thing?

You sure you didn't read it right here:?

You might want to review that, if you hadn't before. And make sure your vendor has a solid return policy, so you can check it out if you go with that model.

There ya go. That's the model I recommend folks get. Direct from mitutoyo via amazon.

Last year i took Greg's advise on the Mitutoyo calipers and could not be more happy.

Do I want the NIST Certificate of tractability?
-
I have never got that. Doesn't seem to be a big deal unless you are answering to an engineering team in a manufacturing environment.
-
I have those too. Same place I got mine.
They’re too accurate /s
It drives me crazy when some measurement or another is off by .0005.

I've wondered about this too. While I really do like precision that a high quality tool (like the Mitutoyo) provides as well as durability and longevity, it seems like the way we use them for loading that like with the use of a comparator, getting the same or repeatable measurements is what's import and not so much the actual accuracy of the measurement. . . ???

I agree with you on the actual measurement vs repeatability. Problem I had with cheaper calipers was they would drift giving a different measurement for the same item at different times. The same applies in my mind for powder charges. I don’t care if my charge says 37.7 but actually weighs 40 so long as it’s repeatable and I’m not concerned with the actual weight. Problem is cheaper scales, or any measuring device tend to drift around. That’s been my experience anyway.

Make sure you buy direct from amazon and not a 3rd party fulfilled by amazon. That is how I ended up with a fake. The fake ones will drift.

I don't buy that much from Amazon, how can you tell if it's from Amazon? I plan on using the link Orkan posted above.
