6.5 PRC
-
I've been dreaming/planning on a future hunting rifle build. I already have a SA stock with a Magpul magazine system. I really want to stay with a short action round because all I'd need to get the gun up and shooting would be a barreled action.
6.5 PRC has lots of benefits to me. Short action, great feeding, flat shooting, enough energy for deer and possibly elk at mid range distances, amazing bullets, and it should be a hand loaders dream round.
One thing that I haven't found reliable information on yet is, can it fit in a standard .308 AICS patterned magazine? If not, what magazine does it fit in?

Yes. Strapless Accurate Mags.

@orkan do you have any experience with this round? I’ve toyed around with the idea of one but know very little about it and don’t know anyone that has any first hand experience with one either

Well you saw Orkan’s psa on the reamer(s):

I would think the max coal for the poly magpul mags would be no beuno with that cartridge.

I've done load dev on about 3-4 different rifles in 6.5PRC. Shot maybe 400 rounds at distance. So, not much experience.
I have worked with it enough to know that I like it. Though only as it pertains to making a short action really shine as a big game rifle. When it comes to DT's or long actions... I'm 7LRM all the way. 7LRM will really put a hurting on a 6.5 of any variety once you get the distance stretched out past 1000yds. Heck, it even starts to show at 800. Though the new 150gr+ heavy 6.5 bullets may change my thoughts on that as well. Just haven't worked with them yet.
That rifle in the link above is responsible for an 8" 5-shot group at 1465yds this last summer, if memory serves. ... and all but one of those impacts could be touched with one hand.

@orkan
Thanks that is exactly what I was looking for. I have no idea why the cartridge interest me so much, I have absolutely no need for it, but I guess we really don’t need have the rifles we half. I can definitely see one of these in my future. My only concern would be brass or lack of for that matter. Isn’t hornady the only supplier right now?

Thats where my interest also lays right now. Do you think we can still get those 155 Hybrids into a Accurate mag still? And it also sounds like the new reamer speck would be the way to go.

Yes.

Anything will fit if you jam the bullet into the case enough. ;)

So just a little update...I'm going to have Travis build me a barreled action in PRC. I was looking at going with a 700 actions/prefit and barrel nut setup, but I decided I want this to be a hunting rifle that my kids can have one day. I'm going to make the investment in a custom. To save some cost up front, I'm going to use my HS Precision stock I took off my .308. Being I already have a bottom metal and stock that saves me $500 plus.
If my timeline of plans/savings happens like I'm thinking, I'll have the gun by the end of summer, first of fall. This place has rubbed off on me too much. Buy once cry once.

I look forward to your report.
I have been wondering about the viability of this chambering in a medium range/light weight hunting rig and it will be nice to have additional user feedback.
Have you discussed the specifics of your build with Travis yet?

@tackyp just the basics. It’s not going to be a fancy build. It’s going to be a hunting rig, I just want something I don’t have to ever worry about going bang when I need it.
