Israel was preparing to capture the promised land, but before doing so they sent two spies into the land. These spies stayed at a harlot's house while in the land. This harlot protected them, kept them from being captured, and helped them escape. Her reason for doing so: she had heard of the power of the God of Israel and believed in Him.
Joshua 2:9-11, "And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. [10] For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. [11] And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath."
Rahab then desires to be spared when Israel takes the city and the spies promise that she will be. Rahab is an interesting case. She is one of two women mentioned in the Genealogies leading to Christ and she is also a foreigner which is unique. Yet even though she was just a harlot, When she trusted God and did what was right God was able to use her to accomplish His eternal purpose.
God expects us to obey Him, yet our past can be forgiven. Regardless of our past, God can use us to accomplish great things in His Kingdom if we will only be willing to submit to Him and obey.
