The idea behind lifetime salaries was so that they would not be tainted or bribed by special interests.

How they act is a completely different issue. My point is that they don't seek the position in congress for the paycheck. They do it for the power and the connections that will lead them to make BIG money outside of their congressional pay.

According to the article linked by the OP, they don't get lifetime salaries. The first part of the article with the claims of the lifetime payments and $800k paychecks is not a statement of fact, it is a question from a reader to Politifact. The reader received the info in chain mail and asked Politifact if it was true.
In the second part of the article, which I suspect many did not actually read, basically every claim in the chain mail except yearly congressional salaries is debunked, and declared all of the congressional claims of lifetime salaries including the Pelosi info to be false. To use the Politifact rating system, they give the claims their worst rating of "Pants on Fire" on their "Truth-o-Meter".
