2018 Hunting Thread

  • Thought I’d be cool if we had one thread that we all could post our hunting draws, plans, failures, and successes for the year.

I put in last night for AZ antelope and elk. I doubt I’ll get drawn, but I need to build points. Deer is due June 15th, and I plan on putting in for whitetail.

  • You have to get picked in a drawing to hunt deer in AZ?

  • It's like that most everywhere with most big game species.

  • We don’t Have to enter drawings. I did however receive the lifetime hunting license for my youngest child a few days ago. They offer the lifetime license for $200 if it is purchased before they turn 3. This license will even allow them to come back and hunt Tennessee even if they are not a resident. Seems like a good investment to me.

  • We don’t have to draw tags here in Mississippi either.

  • There is both over the counter and draw tags for deer here. So you put in for the draw and try and get one of the better hunts first. Then if you don't get drawn you can go buy a over the counter tag.

  • South dakota is draw only with the exception of archery and small game, I think.

  • I guess I'm used to PA There are drawings for doe tags in PA in some hunt areas. You pay your money and you hunt. Private if you know someone, public if you don't.

I don't hunt in Florida because of the fact that you have to put in for a hunt in a number of areas and I just don't care to hunt in the heat down here.

  • One of my brothers and I apply in WY, CO, UT, NM, and AZ for elk, mule deer, and sheep. Currently mainly just building points for limited entry units.

what do you mean by building points? You put in for 3 years pay a fee and next year you have 3 additional chances at success?

I don't know if that's the case in SC, GA, PA. for deer. I do know for Elk in PA there is a drawing.

  • @martino1 That is correct as far as the points goes. Every state's points system is slightly different, but still essentially the same principle that you're building up to better odds of drawing the coveted tags.

  • @martino1 to add to what Travis said...In AZ they do three rounds of drawing names. Round one is for bonus point holders only and are for choices 1 and 2 of your selected hunts. The more points you have the better your chances. Round 2 includes no bonus point holders and is again for your first or second choice of hunts. Round 3 is for your third, fourth and fifth hunt choices.

@tscustoms do you have to buy a license each year in each of the states you draw in to get the bonus points?

  • @tscustoms do you have to buy a license each year in each of the states you draw in to get the bonus points?

    Utah, yes - $65
    AZ, yes - $160
    WY, CO, NM - no

  • Only Draws in Nebraska are Sheep and Elk I think. I don’t know I never plan to hunt them.

    Good luck to everybody though.

So you have to buy a tag in AZ OR UT and maybe go hunting if you are lucky? What's the draw to these states under these conditions?

Can non-residents draw either of those?

That's correct - a general hunting license. I'm admittedly a trophy hunter, and to draw tags to hunt units/areas with high trophy potential it takes time as those tags are highly sought after.

Well I'm putting in for NM from now on. I mean why not, I'm 6 hours away from Albuquerque and I don't have to buy a non resident license to build points.

NV is the same way. NV has some monster mule deer outside of Reno. They all migrate down from the Tahoe basin into the high desert south of Reno. AZ and UT have some of the best elk to hunt, like record setting elk.

Heck if you go with a guide here you pay 15k for a basic bull elk, that throphy bull, he's 20k-25k.

  • @tscustoms Just looked and it appears you cannot.

I was wrong on the Elk it’s not a lottery.

Wow hunting trophy game has really been monitzed. I've been thinking about an elk and a muley. Didn't realize it required that much luck or cash even before you get into the woods.

  • Draw deadline for AZ Deer/Sheep is Tuesday. Just put my draw in for me and my youngest. I'm going for Whitetails only in two different units. For my boy, I put him in for Youth only, any antlered deer, in two units, and a youth only, any deer, in a unit near the AZ/UT border.

I bought a point only for my son for Javelina, and a point for me in bighorn sheep.
