Colossians 3:22-24 says, “Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”
Bondservants are much different than what we consider slaves. Bondservants were people who chose to serve a master in pay for something. Often times Bondservants would commit to serving a man for a number of years in order to marry his daughter.
While we don’t have these Bondservant arrangements today, an employee is in a similar relationship. An employee agrees to work for a boss for a certain amount of money. When we work for our boss it should not be for “eye-service” or just to be seen...but rather serving from the heart. Employees should serve their employer as if they are serving the Lord.
Not all employers are good to their employees. However all employees have the choice of leaving their job and finding another. Yet as long as one chooses to remain as their employee they are to work for them honestly and heartily as if they are serving the Lord.
It is easy to complain about ones job, the work situation, lack of pay, or other things...yet a job is a choice. If we don’t like our job we can leave...yet to speak negative about it accomplishes nothing and is not a Godly attitude. To try and get back at our boss by not working as we have agreed is not right either.
Find a job you love for a boss you can respect and work for...and work for that employer as if you are working for the Lord.
