How often do you clean your .22 rimfire?

  • My CZ455's accuracy is degrading, I'm wondering how often do you clean your .22 and what works well for lead fouling without hurting the barrel?

  • My 40x gets cleaned every 1000-1500 rounds although accuracy doesn’t fall off too much at that point. I clean just like a centerfire with clr, wipe out patch out, and accelerator.

The suppressor needs to be cleaned every 300 rounds or so to maintain accuracy.

  • Clean it when I need to clean it. Some don't seem to need cleaning... ever. Others need frequent maintenance.

CLR and kroil seem to be about all I need to clean 22lr's.

  • @dddoo7 did you ever get an ultrasonic cleaner for your suppressor? Since I have been cleaning the suppressor, I have not cleaned the 40X 22. I have a large amount of Wolf match target ammo and when the GECO ammo is used up I plan on cleaning before changing ammo. Roughly 1500 rounds since last cleaning.

  • @orkan
Are you guys running CLR through carbon steel barrels or strictly stainless? I have used that stuff to clean my baffle for my YHM rim fire suppressor but it's stainless. I know it will take rust off of fiberglass immediately so I was wondering if chrome moly or carbon steel would degrade using it. There is some stuff called Whink you don't want to mess with I know for a fact, it will eat your fingernails off among other things.

  • I run CLR in blued steel barrels as well. I don't let it sit on bluing at the muzzle. I always kroil the bore after I'm done if the rifle is going to sit for any time. Otherwise it gets shot immediately as well after being kroiled.

Neutralizing the clr after use seems to be a logical idea.

heck I still haven't gotten my suppressor yet. Waiting on ATF.... GRRRRRRR

  • @bigfoot I do the same run a patch or two of clr through then dry patch then Kroil. I actually use kroil as the last item on all my calibers when cleaning.

  • Cool, I might attack my Savage 22 with some next time I clean it. No matter how many patches I run through it I always get a little gray tint and I do have some Kroil in my kit. Our Ace here sells it in aerosol form also, running kind of low.

July 8th paperwork went in and got it Christmas Eve to give a rough idea.

  • I have a .22 that I've had for almost a decade now and I don't think it's been cleaned once. Well maybe it's been cleaned once when we were testing accuracy with various ammo once upon a time. The thing shoots good and it was shot a lot before I got my Annie. So I'd say shoot it until you see a problem then clean it.

  • @tpk936

Nope. I still don't have one. It is on a list of things I want...but it has been pushed back on that list for some other shooting related things that I feel are more important at the time.

  • @dddoo7 Prometheus!!! definitely more important....

It most likely is not the dealer's fault. July 8th-Christmas is insanely fast compared to what I have been seeing. The last two I submitted were submitted December 2016 and January 2017. One came back early November 2017 and one in the middle of 2017. 356 days for the first one and 324 days for the second one from mailed to received.

Now...you can call the nfa and see when the suppressor went pending. They typically go pending about a week after they are received.

How did you pay? You can see when your check was cashed. ATF cashes checks or runs your credit card about two days after they receive the paperwork.

If your dealer submitted the paperwork when you paid for the suppressor then there is nothing else he can do.

If your dealer did not have your suppressor in hand yet...then there would be some waiting before it could be submitted. He would have to order the suppressor. Once a serial number came up a form 3 could be submitted. when the form 3 cleared it could then be shipped to your dealer and only when he had it in hand could the form 4 be submitted. I have seen it take up to 4 months for a back ordered suppressor to make it to the dealer....and depending on how far back ordered it was it could take much longer.

Just saying...don't hate your dealer for a problem your government is causing.
