Bullets From The Bible 12-16-17

So...Naaman has leprosy for which there is no cure. He hears of a prophet in Israel who supposedly is able to cure him of this leprosy so word is sent to the king of Israel that Naaman is to be healed. Obviously the king was not the one to go to as the king wasn’t able to heal Naaman. Yet Naaman finally gets in touch with this prophet and goes to his house.

Notice what it says in 2 Kings 5:9-10, Then Naaman went with his horses and chariot, and he stood at the door of Elisha's house. And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean.”

Naaman finally has good news. This is a simple cure and something he can easily do. If it doesn’t work he really hasn’t lost anything so one would think that he would at least try. So now Naaman has all the right piece. He is has the right nation, the right prophet, and the right place and now knows what he must do. You would think that he would be happy for the opportunity. Yet notice his attitude.

2 Kings 5:11-12 says, But Naaman became furious, and went away and said, “Indeed, I said to myself, ‘He will surely come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place, and heal the leprosy.’ “Are not the Abanah and the Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage.”

So instead of being thankful he goes away in a rage. He is mad that the prophet didn’t heal him differently. He is mad that it wasn’t what he thought it would be. He was mad that he couldn’t use the river he wanted. Remember that he is helpless to heal himself and there is no cure. Yet he would rather go away angry than to seek the cure.

We must be very careful as it is easy to reject God’s saving grace simply because we are angry at how He decided to administer that grace.

    More Naaman tomorrow.

    It's not just the noobs.
