My Maternal Grandfather Served from 1937-1957 . He went straight from the Seneca Boarding School in NY to the Navy at age 18.
Pacific Fleet during the war and finished at Mayport in Jacksonville, FL.
He was an aircraft mechanic and saw the transition from cloth biplane to metal monoplane to jets in his career.
He was 89 when he passed away and never talked about the War.
He retired as a Master Chief.
