James 2:19-20 says, “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and tremble!
[20] But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?”

Believing in God is important. Believing is absolutely necessary to be pleasing to God. Yet the reality is even demons believe in God. Not only do they believe, but they tremble at His name. So while believing in God is important, more is necessary than just believing. We must also obey God. Faith without works is dead. James tells them this several times in this chapter. If we believe in God, but fail to obey Him we are no different than the demons. God has always required an obedient faith. Obedience does not and cannot earn our salvation...yet it is necessary to receive salvation and be right with God.
