2 Peter 2:22 says, "But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.”

Peter here is discussing people who know the truth, and then return back to that which they know is not truth. Specifically he was discussing the Jews who realized that Judaism was not correct and that Christ was true, yet then they went back to following the Jewish law instead of Christ. This is such a vivid illustration for us. We realize the putrid and disgusting idea of a dog that will vomit and then turn around and eat it. Yet this is how he is describing one who knows truth and then turns from that truth to return back to his old ways.

Sometimes people after knowing truth will turn back to their old ways. Sometimes it is because they are in the habits of their old ways and even though they know it is wrong old habits are hard to break. Other times it is because they like the pleasures of their old way of living and even though they know it is wrong they return to those old ways for the pleasure they get out of it. Other times one will turn back to the old ways because those around him are living that way and it is difficult to stand up against his friends, family or associates.

Regardless of the reason it does not soften the blow of the disgusting nature of it. When one knows truth and returns to that which is not truth it is like returning to eat vomit. Find truth. Love truth. Hold fast to truth. Never let it go!
