Tumbling!

Cool setup man.

The tongue and groove cabinetry is a nice touch.
Dampened hinges to prevent slams too? Some acoustic treatment and it will be out of sight out of mind.
Pretty quiet as it is now with the lid tight and door shut.https://www.amazon.com/acoustic-foam/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aacoustic foam

I like that timer switch. Where did you find that?
-
This is the one I use. It is not as fancy...but works. It has 30 min, 3hr, and 6hr.

What tumbler is that? How many 308 sized cases will it hold?

Thumlers UV-18 tumbler. I'm not sure how many it will hold but it's a beast. I have dumped 300pcs of 6br in it a few times and it didn't even slow up.
-
Thanks for the tip on the timer switch. Never even thought of that.

I sized all of my 308 brass this morning. It is currently tumbling in rice in my redneck tumbler.
I am starting to shop for a vibratory...but won't be buying for several months. I gotta save money so I have enough when the promethius is ready.
I am considering a vibratory that is capable of wet tumbling for all of the bulk tumbling I do. They make some that will even circulate dirty water out and clean in during the cycle. Seems like it would work better than a rotary.
-
If I were doing brass processing professionally, I would likely get one of those big commercial tumblers we posted on here a year or so ago. Automatic media separation, water management like you mentioned, massive horsepower, etc.
-
I would love one of them...but the 10k plus price tag buys a lot of guns and ammo. I can get into a side dump 5 gal capacity with recirculating water for about $1500. Thing is I don't know if it would be much easier than the 5 gal rotary I use now. It would probably be faster though.
I don't know. I go back and forth. If I buy a big one for wet stainless I'm still gonna want a second one for rice. At that rate I might as well keep the rotary for stainless and just get a Thumblers for rice.

I have same tumbler and timer for my Primal Rice set up. The quietest tumbler ever - love it!

Have you ever looked into cement mixers? I know of guys that do that for large volumes of SS tumbling.
-
A cement mixer would work...but the open top is not ideal. Soap suds form with tumbling and will come out the open top carrying some pins with it.
My rotary has a full 1 hp baldor on it. I can set it up to tumble multiple drums if I wanted and could thereby up the volume significantly. I was just wanting to try the vibratory with the stainless and see if it was any faster. Magnetic tumbling looks interesting too.

I'm not thinking that would work very well. A tumbler full of stainless pins would be HEAVY and would likely stall it out. Then too the pins are so heavy the brass would likely just float on top of it. Just speculation though... I've not tried.

I know that standard reloading vibratory tumblers won't work. Thumblers is about the most "industrial" tumbler made for reloading and it is not capable of tumbling wet.
I haven't seen it work or talked to anyone who has tried one...but Raytech makes some really cool looking tumblers. The AV40SS is made for running wet stainless media and the tumbler is rated for up to 80lb of Media/water/brass. That is about the same capacity as my rotary will handle...but if I load it that full it takes forever to get clean. I figure at 30-40 lb of stainless, 25 lb of brass, and the rest water would make for a good sized load.
The thing that makes me think it might work well is that jewelers use vibratory tumblers with ss media for cleaning jewelry. It is a much smaller scale...but the principle should hold...maybe.

Yeah...that would work. I bet a dry one would make really fast work with rice too!
-
So...I just found out that there are Industrial models of each of the thumbler ultra vibe tumblers. The Industrial models are made to be used with water/stainless. It would be really handy to have one of these with two bowls. One for rice and one for stainless. Problem is...18 lb is not enough to handle what I want to tumble with stainless and the larger model is HUGE!

Sounds like you're going to have to scale down, or scale up! ;)
