May Range Report
-
Well looks like I am slacking. It has been May for 5 days now.
Thank you to all the people that participated in the GunHive Challenge for April 2017 and the last year.
The Challenge continues, shoot daily and post your pictures of the target with the date by midnight your time.Have fun and burn up some ammo.
Went to the range today and shot .22lr, .223 and .308
Shooting Winchester bulk Xpert HV I've had in the bucket for the last 8 or 9 years out of my souped up 10/22; 85 shot.
Shot the .223 (42) and the .308 (8) at the steel bell and some of the IPSC steel out to 570. Shot 3 dots with the .223 hitting 2/3.
-
After yesterday bangin' the steel on the home range is a let down.
-
-
The 4" target is getting to where it is not much of a challenge at 25 yards any more. I am however really tired of shooting without a suppressor on this pistol.
-
5 shots of 7.62X54R offhand On steel was enough energy at 50 yards to break the 2 year old wooden cross bar on the saw horse.
It was not treated and had a few 22LR holes in it.
Heading for Home Depot and Dinner

Early morning.
-
Notice anything different about the terrain?
I'm having a blast up here!
-
Instruction day done. Lots of stuff to work on. Maybe in a year or so it will all be second nature. The info is common sense...but stuff I just haven't thought of and probably wouldn't for years to come. I handled my rifle more today than probably any other week ever...but didn't fire a round.
Had to resort to shooting the daisy in the hotel room. Should get some quality shooting in tomorrow. I'm really excited about applying all of this new info.
-
The dots tell a story...but the real story is seen in the scope...not on paper. The "snapshot"
-
Planting is over! I finished the last 25 acres of beans today, went home early and spent 4 hours mowing lawn so that I could do this.
I have a range in my front yard for the time being, bad news is I was going to put a garden there, but oh well.
Then I practiced. Zeroed the the rifle then practiced what we learned, rebuilding my position after each shot.
I had two shots where everything went right, crosshairs never moved. And three not so good ones.
-
Two shots with BB gun. Not much training or benefit...but it maintains the daily habit.
-
I believe having a home 100 yard range where I can practice this every day is what is going to really set these principles in concrete. I also intent to start shooting at home. So far I have only done subsonic suppressed so as not to disturb the neighbors...but I have decided that they can live with 5-10 supressed 308 rounds per day.
I'm glad to see you got a home
Range set up as well!
-
Hopefully it'll stay for awhile, it's something I lucked into really, piles of dirt left over from a new grain bin install.
I did dry fire practice after shooting, it was late. There's going to be a lot of that as well, now that I have better goals in dry firing. I did a lot of dryfiring before, but there was less purpose to it.

Newly painted at the 914.4 ready for splatter!
I got shot in the right eye today with a YAG lazer...back to shooting righty!!
Splash, splash, splash and some more splash!!
Next week the left eye gets it!
-
Glad to see you back to shooting mike!
I'm ready to burn some powder.
-
@dddoo7
I thought you were dropping that DT and TS 40x for a Daisy!
My next range day is the 28th, weather and health permitting. I need to reconfigure my rifle for shooting righty again.
Looking forward to burning some powder and just shooting out the window again.
-
Chilly today, possibly snow tonight.
The lower and left target was shot in a build position, get up walk around, build position after every shot style.
Still need lots of practice.
-
@rhyno crazy that y'all are expecting snow. I'm very much welcoming this cooler weather, but I'm over the snow part lol.
-
-
-
I shot the 40x with nieces and nephew. Not sure they appreciated the precision...but
They had no trouble hitting a 20oz bottle at 23 yards...even with parallax issues.
-
Almost 6 p.m. shoot 4+1 in the head....
-
-
I spent the night last night in KC at my sisters house. Tonight I am finally back home in my own bed. It has been a blast between shooting and sight seeing in SD.
-
Everything around here is soaked.
We've gotten close to 5" of rain since like Wednesday or something, can't get to the range.
-
985 yards, same target as the last time, 3 shots (blue circles this time), 162g Eld X precision hunter ammo. I am looking for the powder sensitivity to temperature of this ammo to match with trasol firing solutions. Still working on fundamentals
-
-
-
Practicing fundamentals. 10 shots. Obvious scope adjustment between first and second groups.
Can you guess which 3 shots were not "honest"?
-
-
@dddoo7 good job! Bet you'll be close to cleaning the rimfire challenge in no time :)
-
POI changes with powerchange....
just like a Nightforce Competition....but so much cheaper
-
Up and down between each shot. The first four I was still getting used to the new rear bag. I knew when they broke that they didn't feel right and the snapshot confirmed. The 5th dot felt perfect. The stars aligned...breathing was right...snapshot was right. I was so excited that I went back in and got a couple more rounds for the same hole. They felt correct as well and were honest.
I now have enough grass mowed to be able to shoot 100 yards in my back yard. I need to make this a daily thing. 5 honest shots a day until I can get all 5 perfect. Then start adding more.
-
I shot 7 rounds or so rebuilding my position with my 22.
It's started raining again so no picture.
-
More principles. Snapshot still moves a little but it is getting better. Breathing is far from natural...but is also getting easier. I never thought shooting was so
Exhausting. After yesterday's shots I lowered the scope one click...and was wrong. The last three shots yesterday were on target and felt right. I should have trusted that instead of the four that were "awkward". I will adjust it back up tomorrow.
-
Adjusted the scope, see if the zero holds....
-
-
Wild beasts checking my target and eating the mongoose bait again...
-
Shot the right "sighter" with my 40x 22
Shot four times, two of them were good, two were not.
Ideally I need to put a different stock on this rifle, the cheek piece needs to come up a hair and right. But I want to keep it original.
Forgot to post the photo.
-
@mamalukino looks like some fresh chicken dinner there! ;)
-
@gash
Best chicken is fresh killed!!
Those are free range birds; most are descended from fighting stock.
-
Squeaky clean barrel. First five shots. A higher percentage of them are beginning to be right.
-
It's been weeks since I've sat down to shoot. I've been missing it and it felt good to get behind my Annie again. Decided to challenge myself today: 5 shots each, moving at a moderate consistent pace, not stopping or slowing until done. I took my time with the sighters at top, then hit go. Little to no wind coming from my 11ish. Shot with my dear sweet Annie using Center X
Edit to add: this was shot at 50 yards.
-
Shot at the range today, some paper to zero and only out to 440 on the steel. Back to righty!!
Guessing at the scoring rings on the silhouette all 100 yards on the paper. All shots with the rifle were prone; bipod rear bag.
