I think it looks better already even if it is just straight grained laminated walnut.

  • Oil finish or are you going with polyurethane?

  • Banned

    Lookin good!

  • Very gorgeous Wayne!

  • Hey that rifle looks familiar. :)

We might just go with that Wayne. I can't seem to find a couple chunks of wood. I don't run in the right circles I guess.

If anyone can come up with a nice couple chunks of quilted or curly maple in a fair price range... I'm interested.

  • No finish on it right now because I'm out of birchwood casey true oil. I may try some real tung oil just to see what it looks like. Not tung oil finish because that has varnish in it. I also need to cut out for the bipod rail which I have to order yet.. Wayne

  • @rimfire just wipe some acetone on it to see the grain.

  • @rimfire

I like plain tung oil and have used it to finish several projects

  • @orkan

What size chunks do you need I just had 10 cut down not sure what is there but I can look and not sure how long it takes to dry

  • I may be going into Atlanta tomorrow.
    Wife's Birthday shopping.
Highland Hardware keeps a bit in Stock.
If you like woodworking, that place is Nirvana.

    http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/

  • @rimfire, can you post the dimensions of the pieces you'd need for this?

  • Highland keeps 5/4 and 8/4 rough sawn slabs in a separate warehouse out back and sells by the board foot.
Air dried and they can test moisture content. There may be some thicker slabs. They plane one side and bring it into the store for small lots. I can take pictures and email.

Here is the biggest distributor in Georgia.
They import and export exotic woods.
When I drove a flatbed I did some work for them. Whole warehouses at the Port of Savannah full of Mahogany, Teak, and other Tropical lumber and Walnut, Cherry, Oak and dense grained Pine being exported.

You could build a lifetime of gun stocks just from the scraps laying around.

That 400 degree baked and stabilized wood looks interesting as stock material. It is in a scrolling text banner.

    http://www.hardwoodweb.com/wp/species-guide/

  • @orkan The buttstock would have to be a minimum of 10/4 thick x 6" x 16". The forend piece would need to be 10/4 thick x 3" x 18".

  • 12/4 turning stock 18" long should be easy to specify.
    Hard Maple?
Any other hardwood that would substitute?
Heading to the lumber place now. Sportsman Outdoors is the same exit off of the Interstate.
I really want to hit the NRA show too but the wife wants to meet up and go do her nails.
    Oh joy.
Told her I would meet at noon.

  • Highland is off the list. 4/4 and 8/4 only. $8.99 per board foot must buy entire piece wane runout and all random length.

  • Rimfire, can you resaw to a thinner plank from something thicker like 16/4?

  • Atlanta Hardwood is the same exit as Glock too.

  • 8/4 Hard Maple $6.67, Birdseye $13.59 BF.

Can do but first must buy a new resaw blade. The one I have has seen better days.

  • The Wood Store in Concord GA is ten miles away from me. I will go there Monday. He has some 16/4 and 12/4 Walnut and exotic stuff but is out of Maple. He has an EBay store too. He used to be in Griffin GA and I thought he closed up.

This guy is appointment only on Saturday.

  • I was looking at curly and quilted maple because it seemed a guy could get something decent looking without spending thousands.

Going for this kind of look here:

I'd be open to other options as well, but I set a $400 price budget, total, for the wood. So if any of you found some other species of wood with some good character, I'd consider those pieces as well. I just have always wanted a good hard maple with some character like the above pictures.

  • Pretty, wouldn't mind something like that.

  • Years ago when I was making custom knives i used coco bola wood, zebra wood, ebony wood, and iron wood.Tung oil gave them a very nice finish.Orkan, that wood is very nice.

  • I have pics to post later. Ebony was $30 a pound. They had a 300 pound block. Zebra wood was awesome. $22 a BF. 8/4 though. Some huge slabs of Cherry, Walnut, Pecan. That Wood Heat Treatment makes Poplar look like Walnut. Just got the cheap Lee dies locally for $3.99. 223 and 30-06 for now. One more stop looking for the Lee Press.

  • Well if any of you can find me some good wood in my $400 budget, I'll give you a 10% finders fee.

  • I made my son's crib out of zebra wood. It is almost like cherry with ebony streaks through it. There is a fancy name for it...but I don't remember it. Bought it from a local lumber store that had everything....but they went out of business several years ago. Seems most people don't appreciate quality anymore. I gave something like $375 for all the wood. Had more in the crib than a new one would cost...but it is much more special and higher quality.

Finish on the wood is tung oil and clear polyurethane only.

  • An heirloom for certain.

Been a fun search so far today.
Purple Heart, is sure enough purple.
They even had trimmings from Boyds Gunstocks for turning blanks.

  • Purple Heart?
This is the guy close to me.
He is in Concord, I'm in Zebulon GA.

    He has over 500 listings.
Some 16/4 Maple and 12/4 imported like Sapele.

The 16/4 Maple is in lengths up to 40" X 10" wide

  • This place only had 8/4 and raw slabs

Two good Walnut blanks on the right were the first thing that caught my eye.

    $128 and $147 4" thick

These were only 2" thick Frown. Phone was dying fast. This needed a flash.

One I grabbed off of the top just to check. I really needed to wipe it down with mineral spirits to see the grain better.

    IMG_20170506_095446_zpsbflpdmfv.jpg
Nothing Fancy Really. It did have some waves when held at an angle to the light but no obvious Tiger Stripes.

I bought a 5/4 piece of Sapele like this to mount my Lee Challenger Press and CPS_Lite on for clamping to the kitchen table.
Strong lightweight but rather open grained wood.
It planed with hand tools nicely last night cleaning up and relieving the edges
