It is a cool gun...but it has been modified almost as much as mine has been. I would rather start with a bone stock rifle than one some random person modified...but the freeland accessories carry some value with the vintage crowd. One might strip this one down...sell freeland parts and redfield sights and end up with a really nice barreled action for not a crazy amount of money. It looks like an early one and considering the 4xxx serial number I would imagine it to be in the mid to late 50's. It would need modification to accept remington triggers...but not a big deal.

I don't know what everyone's stance on Tax Returns are, I know it's stupid but I haven't changed it yet.
I'm getting a fair bit back and will be buying a 40x if I can find one.
There's three really nice ones right now and they'll be gone by the time I get the money.
Haha, I really like that is marked later one that would allow me to buy a stock for it.

Yes, there will be others.
I think most are sitting in safes and are sold to pay bills or as part of an estate.I would rather have a nice 40X or a 3 position Anschutz than any AR over $1500 unless it is a KA SR-25.
The Local club runs a class just for the classic older 3p rifles like the 52, 40X, Kimber 82G and pre 1990 Anschutz in wood stocks. That keeps you from going against the Aluminum stock Walther 300, 400 and the Annie Precise 2013, 1913 or the new 54-30.

All of those rifles will shoot lights out but the Winchester is way under-valued at present.

The winchester is a beauty...and they will shoot very well too. I have a soft place for the 52's...but unless one is going with a vintage unertl scope and mounts it is difficult to put a scope on them. If I could have put a good scope base, trigger, and stock on a win 52 I would have built a 52 instead of a 40x...but the 52 is just not compatible with anything. the 52 is a buy it and shoot it like it is rifle. The 40x is adaptable to whatever configuration one might desire.

It should sell at the buy it now price, but would be border line high. By the time you spend $250 for a bolt plus $150 for a good trigger plus $50 for the small parts You're in pretty deep and you don't have a stock yet. I already have a bolt and trigger and I'm too chicken to buy it. Wayne

This is true as I have seen complete rifles sell under $1000. Not many...but a few.

Good luck bidding.Sorry if I helped hijack your thread! I saw that freeland stock stock when the rifle was first listed and would love to have it. The problem I see with this rifle is the fact that they don't show the barrel channel from the top. It is a standard barrel rifle and I would be afraid the channel is for a larger dia barrel. I wasn't interested enough to ask the seller that question.

It did go for a decent price. Apparently the one I liked better was liked by others as well. It is quite a bit higher...even more than I think it would be worth if I was in the market for one.

I have seen other us marked ones sell for under 1500. I don't know for sure...but I bet it is just a pretty one....and like you said the 700 trigger compatible doesn't hurt.
I saw one a few months ago sell for $1800...and I am still kinda wishing I had picked it up. It was a 700 style with scope base bedded into a manners T4 with jewel trigger. That is a lot of value for the $1800 especially considering that the stocks start at around $700. I already had the parts for mine when I saw that one or I would have bought it and had it converted to repeater.

I felt quite foolish for passing up that tan repeater you sold a couple years ago. At the time I just thought that my CZ was everything I would ever need. It was not until I actually started shooting it that I found the inefficiencies of it.

If Remington still made them they would be 1 moa shooters if one was lucky. I don't believe it is the Remington brand that makes these 40x's shoot so well. I believe it is the 1950-60's American Craftsmanship that makes them shoot. That would mean that people would still be looking for the older models...it would just be harder to find them because they would be cluttered in among the 1000's of new ones.

@dddoo7 hmm not sure about that, the 40x is still a good gun. They're not factory guns like your off the shelf r700.

Just to close the loop, the Winchester 52-D sold for a tic less than $1400 which is just about exactly what I paid for the last two I bought at the Verein last year by the time the new owner pays shipping and transfer fees.

Just remember, if any of you buy that one, its an "A" model receiver and will need the tang cut to accept rem700 triggers w/safety.

Something to think about...but wouldn't stop ME from buying one if it sold at a decent price. I know people who can fix that problem.
Also, can a bottom safety trigger be used without modification to the rifle?
